The AKAI sampler. An overview!! First came the 12 bit Akai's starting in 1984 with the S612, a simple 6 sample in ram sampler using quick-disks which evolved into the more powerful S700 and X7000 Keyboard in '85.
Next came the S900 & Mpc60 sampler/sequencer in 1986 along with the old EW wind-Instruments. 2 years later in '88, The S1000 was released. These upgraded the series to 16 bit, 8 poly assignable-outs instead of mono ones. & a massive (at the time) 32mb maximum ram!!!(actually 32mb is fuck of alot for doing a dance toon! Mahjong Age Of Alchemy. !).
The Akai S5000 and S6000 offer a wide variety of storage options, including the ability to replace the standard 3.5' floppy drive with an optional. Hi I'm totally new to samplers, hardware, making music like this. So forgive my ignorance. I'm trying to install an internal SCSI drive in my akai s5000.
We continue thru to the S1100 a further 2 years later in 1990, and sometime around that 2 years from the release of the S1000 the S950 came along, keeping the 12 bit for economy but adding stuff from the S1000 OS like timestretch. The S950 was like a budget S1000. Very effective. 1992 now and in came the first 3000 series with a basic structure of 32mb standard expanded, 8 poly outs & stereo in/out. There were various guises. The budget S01 - 8 note poly mono-timbrel unit was released..
